1 The writing paper has black edges, as do letters 51 and 52, for Aliceâs death.
2 On 2nd April 1892, the Gardners left for Europe. They went to Paris, London and Venice, staying at Palazzo Barbaro (arriving 14th June) and leaving in August to go to Switzerland, Dresden, Munich, then coming back to Venice at the end of August, and again in Paris, from 22nd September till December. See Mrs Gardner Scrapbook n 12.

4 William, with his wife Alice Howe Gibbens (1849â1922) and their children Henry (1879â1947), William (1882â1961), Margaret (Peggy) (1887â1950) and Alexander Roberston (1890â1946). Herman, born in 1884, died at eighteen months, in 1885.
5 The William James family sailed from New York on the Friesland on 25th May. They spent more than a year in Europe, staying in Florence through March 1893. William went to Padua, âto transact some psychical researchâ (The Correspondence of William James, William and Henry II p 240) and to Venice in November. The family then went to Switzerland (April 1893) and England, leaving from Liverpool on 24th August 1893, and arriving in Boston on 2nd September.
